When they made the matrix, they used like hecka still shot cameras to do the "Matrixy Bullet-time" effect, but now, Toshiba makes this video using a new technique called timesculpture. Instead of using still shot cameras, they used 200 camcorders, all totaling to having 20 terabytes of video captured in all.. Yikes.

Timesculpture = Bullettime, but 200 times epicerr...

As we've seen, it's not exactly all that difficult for someone with the necessary skills to whip up their own gesture-based control system, but the folks at upstart Mgestyk Technologies seem to think they've got something a bit more notable on their hands, and they're actually planning on selling it to the general public. While the complete details are a bit light at the moment, their system apparently makes use of nothing more than an "affordable 3D camera" and some custom software to capture even small hand gestures, which seems to work at least reasonably well in the video after the break -- though we doubt many gamers will be quick to ditch their Razer or SteelSeries mouse. What's more, while Mgestyk already has a waiting list going, they aren't making any promises about an actual release date just yet, or a price for that matter, with them only saying that it'll be "in the range of a high-end webcam."

Can't wait to try this out on Halo! :D

YAHOO WANTS TO BE BOUGHT?

Yahoo Co-founder and CEO Jerry Yang has suggested Microsoft buying Yahoo would be "the best thing".

At the Web 2.0 Summit in San Francisco, California, Yang said "To this day the best thing for Microsoft to do is buy Yahoo....I don't think that is a bad idea at all, at the right price whatever that price is. We're willing to sell the company."

Yahoo declined a bid from Microsoft for $33 (£21) a share from Microsoft back in May. Since then Yahoo shares have plummeted and Microsoft publicly stated it no longer had any interest in buying Yahoo.

Yang was questioned by one audience member regarding Yahoo's rejection of the Microsoft offer. "They walked away from a public offering and we were ready to negotiate. We wanted to negotiate a deal. We felt we weren't that far apart.

"At the end of the day, they withdrew and they have since been clear about not wanting to buy the company," explained Mr Yang.

Microsoft has not commented on Yangs latest revelations. If Microsoft were to buy Yahoo now they would get a good bargain compared to back in May. Since May the shares have dropped from $28.67 to $13.92 at the time of writing.

Wow, just goes to show that this financial crisissy thing is screwing with everyone...

Lol, this would be pretty cool if they were decent quality movies...

In this current age of streaming video there is just about anything you can watch on the internet ranging from TV Shows on BBC iplayer to Films on Hulu but one service that seems to want to jump on that now is Youtube. Youtube is among the most visited sites daily on the the internet and major film studios are thinking of using that to their advantage by putting feature films on the site, the only downside to the whole of this bit of news is inclusion of adverts but its a small price to pay really if you can watch a full feature length movie. The form of advertising hasn't been fully confirmed yet but reports suggest that it will be down to the studios what sort of advertising they go with to help fund this service.

At the present time of writing this article Google haven't mentioned if and when this could roll out but one studio executive mentioned to CNET that it's very close to going through. "It's not imminent, But it's going to happen I would say you can expect to see it, if all goes well, sometime within the next 30 to 90 days".

One studio that is already part of the Youtube family is Lionsgate who have been offering users of the site access to short film clips of upcoming movies. Whatever happens its a sign now that Youtube is now a bit more then just an upload and watch site, its a fully fledged entertainment site.

Today at PDC, Microsoft announced its Windows Azure cloud services and platform.

Ray Ozzie introduced the new service in a packed keynote in Los Angeles this morning. Announcing Azure Ozzie said "think of it as Windows in the cloud".

Azure will provide businesses with a set of hosted services from Microsoft that allow developers to build rich web based applications that can scale well. Housed in Microsoft's data centers, the service will initially be released as a Community Technology Preview and free of charge during its testing phase.

Ozzie introduced a new start up named "Bluehoo" which is the latest interactive social networking site based on the Windows Azure platform.

A Bluehoo spokesperson announced that the download and site would be operational from mid-day US ET.

Moreover, while the project was directed towards bicycling for the sake of simplicity, there’s a myriad of sports and activities where a greater field of view becomes an advantage, so feel free to speculate.

On a final note, although only a concept, no element of Hindsight makes use of futuristic nano e-ink robots that will only be available come 2018. It is, at its core, a pair of sunglasses and a century old lens technology.

Facing a lack of the fresh weed for use in traditional Ayurvedic medical preparations, the government ministry responsible wants to be excepted from laws that have made marijuana illegal on the Indian Ocean island since the 1890s. (itsss Backk... WILD CARRD B**CHES)

The Ministry of Indigenous Medicine this month broached a plan to grow 4,000 kg (8,818 lb) a year of marijuana, also known as cannabis, on a proposed 20 acre (8 hectares) farm.
"We are interested in getting some approval to grow some cannabis with government sponsorship, but there must be controls. It is under study," Asoka Malimage, secretary at the Ministry of Indigenous Medicine, told Reuters Thursday.
Ayurveda is a traditional medicine with roots in the early Hindu era which makes wide use of herbs and natural remedies with the goal of healing the body and mind. In Sri Lanka, ayurveda practitioners outnumber Western-trained doctors.
Fresh marijuana fried in ghee, a form of clarified butter, is used in about 18 different traditional medicines for treating a wide variety of ailments, Malimage said.
"At the moment they are getting some stocks from the courts of law, because there are people who grow this cannabis illegally and they have been raided by the police," Malimage said.
But the problem with that weed is that it is old and dried out, said Dr. Dayangani Senasekara, head of state-run Bandaranaike Memorial Ayurvedic Research Institute in Colombo.
"You can't get the fresh juice from old cannabis. What we get now is the powdered form and it's not effective," Senasekara said.
The institute is making preparations that use marijuana to treat high cholesterol, diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis and skin discolorations, and soon will formulate one for treating cataracts, Senasekara said.
The use of marijuana to treat glaucoma, nausea, pain and the loss of appetite from diseases like cancer and AIDS has been the subject of great medical debate in the west.
Some countries and parts of the United States have permitted its use to treat those conditions, after some medical studies showed it was effective.

Those b#$*@*%s at Microsoft got another patent.

This time it's a patent for blocking out or bleeping words in an audio stream. In the patent description the company notes that "The censored speech can either be stored or made available to an audience in real-time."

Originally filed 4 years ago the company only had the patent approved last week. It's expected Microsoft will use the technology in upcoming versions of Xbox Live where it can filter bad words that people use on its network.

news.com suggests that the technology could be used for more than just censoring profanity, suggesting that perhaps China or another government would want it employed for other phrases, such as Tibet or free speech.

This album is a collaboration betweet Chris Cornell and Timbaland.. and Ohhh My GOD... from what i heard so far... this album is pretty much greatness at its outmost.. GREATEST... Timbaland just KILLED it.. (in a very very VERY good way)... this is genious.. im loving the sounds coming out of this record..

With the idea of remixing songs from his previous album Carry On (2007), Cornell first came into contact with Timbaland by the suggestion of his brother-in-law. However, the collaboration evolved into the duo writing and recording an entire album in just six weeks,... (LOL.. seriously thats fuckin krazy) notably with the conceptual direction of "tying it all together musically", which Cornell describes as "[harkening] back to albums that I listened to when I was a kid, where the music never stops" and that it "begs to be listened to on headphones all the way through" ( that iss very true... cant really stop listning to these tracks...

MICROSOFT CONFIRMS NAME OF NEXT OPPERATING SYSTEM

Microsoft has confirmed that Windows 7 will be the final name for the next generation operating system.

In a blog, Mike Nash, Corporate Vice President, Windows Product Management confirmed the news.

"Since we began development of the next version of the Windows client operating system we have been referring to it by a codename, "Windows 7." But now is a good time to announce that we've decided to officially call the next version of Windows, "Windows 7" Nash said.

This is the first time a Windows OS has been named by its codename. The decision was made for simplicity. Nash added "this is the seventh release of Windows, so therefore "Windows 7" just makes sense."

Microsoft is set to reveal a lot more about Windows 7 at its professional developers conference which starts on the 27th October. Neowin will be live all week so look out for some great information about the future of Windows right here.

Perfect secrecy has come a step closer with the launch of the world's first computer network protected by unbreakable quantum encryption at a scientific conference in Vienna.

The network connects six locations across Vienna and in the nearby town of St Poelten, using 200 km of standard commercial fibre optic cables.

Quantum cryptography is completely different from the kinds of security schemes used on computer networks today.

OMG NEW GAME DETAILS!

Basically the teaser was for a new game called Halo 3: Recon which will be an prequel, releasing in Fall of 2009. I can't wait... Here's what Bungie has to say...

Bungie has several projects underway within the studio, one of which is a brand new campaign experience for Halo 3 that we teased two weeks ago. Now, at long last, we can lift the shroud of secrecy and shed a little more light on what we've been working on.

We'll have more to say later, but for now, check out our official announcement trailer which builds upon the teaser and provides new insights into what awaits next Fall.

If researchers at Boston University's College of Engineering have their way, light bulbs of the future may be the highway your data gets carried along. A team at the school is working on low-power LEDs which could utilize an optical communication system to carry data wirelessly. Using a technique which rapidly switches the LEDs on and off data transmissions could be made via imperceptible -- yet undoubtedly brain-scrambling -- flickering patterns, and each light would be its own network entry point at speeds of 1 to 10Mbps. The concept is more secure than current RF techniques because it requires linked devices be in line-of-sight, and the technology would draw far less energy than conventional radios. Says professor Thomas Little, "Imagine if your computer, iPhone, TV, radio and thermostat could all communicate with you when you walked in a room just by flipping the wall light switch and without the usual cluster of wires." Japan's National Institute of Information and Communications Technology (NICT) and Victor Company of Japan Ltd jointly developed a 72-inch 3D display that can be viewed with the naked eye and exhibited it at CEATEC JAPAN 2008.

The display has a resolution of 1920 x 1080p (full HD) and allows users to view 3D images corresponding to the horizontal angle from which it is watched (within ±20° to right and left).

The display uses multiple projectors that project images on the screen from the back to enable the 3D representation. Each projector reportedly has a resolution of 1920 x 1080p (full HD), providing a pixel count of 100 million or higher in total.

By optimizing the conditions of the optical system, such as the alignment of the projectors, the light emitted from the screen is controlled so that it looks similar to the light reflected off of real objects.

Images displayed on existing 3D displays that can be viewed with the naked eye can only be seen from a limited number of viewpoints. And those displays have lower resolutions because they use a parallax barrier or a lenticular lens to reproduce images for right and left eyes.

NICT plans to develop a prototype in view of commercialization by 2011. Based on the latest display technology, it is possible to develop a 200- to 300-inch 3D display that can be viewed with the naked eyes, according to the institute.

Russia hopes to deploy a new nuclear missile next year designed to penetrate anti-missile defenses and will build eight submarines to carry it, defense officials said on Thursday.

President Dmitry Medvedev and Prime Minister Vladimir Putin have both pledged to extend Russia's recent military build-up with extra funds to buy new, high-tech arms. On Wednesday, Putin announced an extra $3.1 billion of spending next year, partly to replace equipment lost in the Georgia war.

Despite the billions of dollars spent on them since Putin came to power as president in 2000, Russia's 1 million-strong armed forces remain poorly equipped, badly paid and reliant on a large proportion of unwilling conscripts.

The deputy commander in chief of the Russian navy, Admiral Alexander Tatarinov, said on Thursday that by 2015 Moscow would build a fleet of nuclear-powered submarines to carry a new, nuclear-capable strategic missile.

"The navy has gone over to building ships and nuclear submarines by the batch," Tatarinov told Interfax news agency.

Ryan Payton, former assistant producer on Metal Gear Solid 4, has signed on with Microsoft Game Studios to work on future Halo games, Microsoft Game Studios said today, confirming the rumor Kotaku broke last month.
"Microsoft has confirmed the addition of Ryan Payton, formerly of Kojima Productions to Microsoft Game Studios," said Phil Spencer, in a prepared statement sent to Kotaku. "Payton joins a group of industry heavy hitters to recently arrive at Microsoft Game Studios, including Corrine Yu from Gearbox and Kenneth Scott of id Software, as well as David Wu from Pseudo Interactive and Frank O’Connor, a Bungie veteran. Microsoft Game Studios is thrilled to have such talented people working to develop new and exciting projects within the Halo universe and supporting existing projects from studios like Bungie and Ensemble."
While the official statement doesn't go into details about Payton's job, we've been told he will be the creative director for the upcoming Peter Jackson Halo game.

On Friday, Mahoney and I went to Panasonic HQ to check out one of the first prototypes of their ludicrous 150-inch plasma TV. This thing puts the 103-incher that I checked out last year to shame, weighing a whopping 1700 pounds before the stand is attached and sucking up 7kW of power while it runs. We hooked up our energy-efficient-in-comparison PS3 and suffered through playing a bunch of video games on it to report back to you. You're welcome! Today, a taste, with me sizing up a weighted companion cube in Portal, above, and, after the jump, seeing what a 42-inch steering wheel on Gran Turismo would be like in real life and learning the ropes in Call of Duty 4. Epic Games won't be bringing Gears of War 2 to the PC. That's their story and they're stickin' to it. It's "definitely" not happening, swears designer Cliff Bleszinski, pointing to a worsening PC gaming environment.
The person who is savvy enough to want to have a good PC to upgrade their video card, is a person who is savvy enough to know [BitTorrent] to know all the elements so they can pirate software, therefore, high-end videogames are suffering very much on the PC.

Russia is upgrading military readiness

President Medvedev also announces expanded ties with Venezuela, including a billion-dollar military loan.

MOSCOW - Russia continued its international muscle-flexing on Friday, strengthening its ties to Venezuela through a $1 billion military loan and a new oil consortium as it announced an upgrade of its own military focusing on nuclear deterrence and combat readiness.

President Dmitry Medvedev also announced plans to begin large-scale production of warships, primarily nuclear-powered submarines armed with cruise missiles.

A Kotaku reader who works for Best Buy sends us pictures for a pre-holiday meeting in Dallas, where they not only got a chance to check out some Gears of War 2 multiplayer, but also got a sneak peak at the Limited Edition pre-order the retailer will be offering exclusively starting October 5th.
So the deal is, whoever preorders GOW2 Limited Edition starting October 5th gets a remote control version of a Centaur tank for free! It’s a COG vehicle from Gears2 and only available at Best Buy. It’s going to be sick. I took a couple of pictures for you guys to check it out.
That's actually a rather drool-worthy promo right there, assuming that it is real, of course. Can't take off the rumor tag until official confirmation, but as it stands things are looking pretty good for Best Buy's Gears 2 pre-orders with this baby on their side.

Basicly ODST (Orbital Drop Shock Troopers) fly toward the city right when the Prophet of Regret does a slip space jump which destroys the city of New Mombasa... Then you see one last ODST Pod flying down which will probably be the main character of the expansion (or whatever it is)...

Next Halo squad-based, Master Chief-free?

Source: A source with firsthand knowledge of Bungie's development.

What we heard: Last year, those skilled enough to complete Halo 3 on legendary difficulty were treated to an extended ending of the game after the credits rolled. For those who don't have a knack for Covenant slaying, numerous YouTube videos depict how, after the defeat of the Flood, series hero the Master Chief is left adrift in space in half of the United Nations Space Command (UNSC) ship Forward Unto Dawn.

After a brief conversation with the AI Cortana, the genetically enhanced, perpetually armored Chief enters a hypersleep chamber. The cutscene camera switches to an exterior shot, which pulls back to reveal the remnants of the Dawn entering orbit around a mystery planet. As the sun rises on the planet, music swells, and the screen fades to white, at which point the cutscene abruptly ends.

With that setup, many assumed that Bungie's next project would feature the Master Chief marooned on a strange planet, struggling for survival--a sort of off-world Far Cry. However, a source with knowledge of the studio's development slate told GameSpot a different story. She or he said that sometime this year, Bungie will announce a "darker, grittier" Halo game that doesn't feature the Master Chief at all.

According to the source, the new Halo game will be a spin-off that resembles "a cross between Ghost Recon and Gears of War." It will reportedly tell a "less cartoony" and "more bloody, violent, and grim" tale of a battle between UNSC forces and the pan-racial religious empire known as the Covenant. The game's atmosphere was described as similar to that of the live-action Halo shorts directed by South African filmmaker Neil Blomkamp (pictured), who was to helm the now-stalled big-screen adaptation of the game.

The source says that the upcoming Halo game is a tactical shooter that will follow a squad of colonial marines or orbital-drop shock troopers engaged in "intense" fighting on the ground. Gameplay details were scant, other than the fact that it will reportedly let gamers play as an entire squad in co-op mode through the entire campaign. The exact number of co-op players has yet to be finalized, but it could be as high as eight. It is unclear if the new game is the same as the "Halo: Forerunner" project first rumored in 2006.

The official story: Microsoft had not yet responded to requests for comment as of press time.

Bogus or not bogus?: Based on the strength of the source, this is almost certainly not bogus. And with Bungie's teaser last week, news about the game could arrive as soon as tomorrow's Microsoft press conference at the E3 Media & Business Summit.

We find it indicative of the quality of the past Electronic Entertainment Expo that the biggest piece of news out of the event was not a new high-profile game, or a console redesign -- but rather, the "major" announcement that was not actually announced. Its pretty much been an year since KanYe dropped his last album; Graduation.. i think its time for him to drop his next masterpeice..
from what i hear.. the next album is called "808's and Heartbreak".. 808's refering to the Roland 808 Drum Machine.. and Heartbreak.. obviously prolly cos the niggas been thru some dramatic shit... Break up n death of his mum...

This album will feature him sining on Auto Tune.. (that lil wayne crap).. hopefully he'll make it sound better.. if u havent heard heard his latest single for the album "Love Lockdown" he clearly uses Auto tune and 808s and DAMN.. this muthafuka pulled it off.. it hit the top of the charts on iTunes today... pretty NOIIICE...

The album was originally rumored to be entitled "Good Ass Job" by Billboard Magazine, though it was later revealed by online hip-hop/fashion magazine Urban Lookout that the correct name would be 808's & Heartbreak. This was later confirmed through the rappers online blog.
The first single off the album will be "Love Lockdown", which has already been performed live and is planned for release to U.S. Top 40 radio on October 7, 2008. The official, version of the song was posted onto Kanye's blog on September 16 and is now being played by radio stations. The song was premiered at the 2008 MTV Video Music Awards. Another song, "Heartless", is also being performed by Kanye at his recent concerts and, according to his blog, he is in the studio after his recent arrest, presumingly adding the finishing touches to "Heartless".

On 15th September on 106 and Park, Kanye announced that "808s & Heartbreak" will be finished in 2 weeks.
